March Madness 2022 Highlights
Here are the Campus Wardrobe-represented teams that played in this year’s NCAA Basketball Tournament:
The University of Houston Men's Basketball program competed in the 23rd NCAA Tournament in school history, and 2022 marks the fourth time that Houston will compete in four consecutive tournaments. Winners of 12 of its last 13 games, the Cougars advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the second straight season and enjoyed their 32nd win of the year. The team has only made six other Elite Eight appearances. Villanova was too tough to beat, however, and the Cougars were not able to advance to their third Final Four in the previous six tournaments.
Top-seed Gonzaga made it to the Sweet 16 this year, beating Georgia State and the University of Memphis, but then losing to Arkansas by six points. Despite the loss, Gonzaga had an incredible tournament, kicking its offense into high gear, and overall experienced a solid season, shooting 73% as a team.
Iowa State University (22-13) advanced to their sixth Sweet 16 in program history and first since 2016. Iowa would then lose to Miami 70-56, ending their time in the tournament. Despite the loss, ISU hit a lot of milestones. This year, Iowa State topped its highest seed in the NCAA Tournament since 1997. It's just the second time ISU has beaten two single-digit seeds in a season.
The Friars also advanced to the Sweet 16 which was the first time since 1997. They would only make it that for, however, since the Jayhawks beat them 66-61. This was Friars' biggest challenge to date, and they performed fairly well!
While Baylor was the first number one seed to go down, the university was picked in 4.31% of brackets to repeat as champions. During the second round, they were beaten by eighth-seeded University of North Carolina.
The seventh-seeded Murray State men's basketball team saw its season come to a close with a 70-60 loss to the No. 15 seed Saint Peter's in the second round of the 2022 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship. Before the loss, the Racers had the nation's longest winning streak at 21 games!
Despite being the ninth seed, the University of Memphis gave the overall number-one team, Gonzaga University, all they had in their four-point defeat in the second round, ending their March Madness run. Even though the Tigers began the season with a 9-8 record through the middle of January, they didn't give up and continued their pursuit of the NCAA Tournament by winning 13 games and just having three losses.
University of Alabama at Birmingham
UAB only made it to the first round of March Madness, losing to a number five seed, the University of Houston. For a #12 team, the Blazers gave it their all!
This was Seton Hall's fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last six tournaments played and 14th all-time appearance. Seton Hall garnered its seventh 20-win season under head coach Kevin Willard and finished in the top half of the Big East Conference standings for the seventh consecutive year. The Pirates finished off the season 18-2. The only defeats came in these last two games when they lost to UConn and TCU.
This was SDSU's ninth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 13 years, it's 16th overall, and third since head coach Brian Dutcher took over five years ago. The Aztecs were eliminated from the tournament with a 72-69 loss to Creighton.
Colgate entered the tournament in the top 10 ranking in the nation in four different categories (second in 3-point field goal percentage, fifth in assists, seventh in 3-point field goals made, and eighth in assist-turnover ratio). In addition, the university carried a program-record 15-game winning streak into the NCAA tournament, which was the second-longest win streak in the country at the time.
This was Loyola University Chicago’s third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last five seasons and eighth overall. The Ramblers closed the 2021-22 season at 25-8 overall (13-5 MVC).
The Spiders finished the year 24-13 overall, as their five-game winning streak came to an end after making it to the second round. This was their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2011.
The Spartans completed the season with a 24-7 record after winning both the MEAC regular-season and tournament titles. This was their third appearance in the tournament, and they are now 2-3 overall in the big dance.
Creighton ends the 2021-22 season with a 23-12 record, which is a huge comparison to last year’s 22-win team that lost all five starters.
The Marquette University men's basketball team saw its 2021-22 season come to an end with a 95-63 loss to North Carolina in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. The Golden Eagles were seeded ninth in the East Region.
Akron made its fifth NCAA Division I Tournament Appearance and played a good game against UCLA but ultimately lost 53-57.
Georgia State had its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance since 2015 and sixth time overall. The Panthers saw its 10-game winning streak snap, which was the 10th longest in the country entering the NCAA Tournament. The team fell to 2-6 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. This was Georgia State's second time as a No. 16 seed.
The women’s team had an impeccable season and is going to the Final Four, continuing their march as a title favorite.
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
Chattanooga had a super close game against Illinois during the first round, ultimately losing by a single point (54-53). The team finished the season 27-8 overall.
The Catamounts had a short-winded run as 13th-seeded Vermont had a 75-71 loss to fourth-ranked Arkansas in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.
Davidson lost to seventh-seeded Michigan State, 74-73, in the opening round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament. This was their 15th tournament appearance. This year, Wildcats tied for the second-most wins in school history, finishing off with 27-7.
Montana State opened its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 26 years with a bang when Abdul Mohamed hit a jump shot along the baseline on the Bobcats' second possession. From there, Texas Tech took the lead, and Montana State eventually fell to Texas Tech, 97-62, in the first round of the Division I Men's Basketball Championship.
Lancers played in their first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament game, however the Cinderella story they all hoped for wouldn’t come to fruition. Instead, they lost to third seed Tennessee 88-56. The season had many milestones, such as having the 26-7 overall record and 15-1 in the Big South.
Texas Southern's basketball season came to a close as top-seeded Kansas took an 83-56 win. TSU closed out the season with a 19-13 record, the most wins since head coach Johnny Jones' first season at the university.
The No. 16 seeded Wright State had an historic season that ended when it fell to No. 1 Arizona in the First Round of the NCAA Division I tournament. The 87-70 loss finished a season that saw WSU record 20-plus win for the sixth time in seven years and captures its first NCAA Division I postseason victory, defeating Bryant 93-82 in the First Four.
Bryant University saw its season end in the 2022 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship First Four against Wright State.
