History

In 1839, Farmville Female Seminary Association was founded and led by a Methodist minister, Solomon Lea. The school suffered some financial difficulty during Reconstruction but recovered in 1875 when a new charter was granted. It was renamed Farmville College until 1884, when it became State Female Normal School. In 1954, it was authorized to issue graduate diplomas, and in 2002, Virginia Governor Mark Warner signed legislation designating the school as Longwood University.
