Iowa State University of Science and Technology (Iowa State University or Iowa State) is a public land-grant research university in Ames, Iowa. It is the largest university in Iowa and the third-largest university in the Big 12 athletic conference. It is also classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities—Very high research activity” and is a member of the Association of American Universities.  

 

History 

Founded in 1858, Iowa State became the nation’s first designated land-grant institution once the Iowa Legislature accepted the provisions of the 1862 Morrill Act—making Iowa the first state to do so. During WWII, ISU was one of 131 colleges and universities nationally that took part in the V-12 Navy College Training Program. On July 4, 1949, the college was renamed Iowa State University of Science and Technology.

 

Academics & Campus

Located in Ames, Iowa, ISU’s campus contains over 160 buildings and includes 490 acres of trees, plants, and classically designed buildings. It operates 20 residence halls which are divided into geographical areas. ISU has nearly 27,000 students which have access to over 900 student organizations and 50 Greek chapters that involve 14.6% of undergrads. Full of history and an abundance of knowledge, Iowa State provides world-class programs in agriculture, technology, science, art, and more.

Athletics – Cyclones

Iowa State University’s athletic teams compete in Division I of the NCAA and are founding members of the Big 12 Conference. They are also members of the Central States Collegiate Hockey League of the American Collegiate Hockey Association. The “Cyclones” name dates back to 1895 when Iowa suffered an unusually high number of devastating cyclones (aka tornadoes).

 

The Cyclones’ athletics program includes:
 

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, track and field, swimming and diving, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball.

 

Men: basketball, football, golf, track and field, cross country, and wrestling.

 

Iowa State has a 1339-1293 all-time record and has been to the NCAA tournament 19 times including 5 Sweet 16 appearances, an Elite 8 appearance, and a Final Four appearance. ISU has only won 6 regular conference titles and 6 conference tournament titles. Go Cyclones!
