Coastal Carolina University (CCU or Coastal) is a public university. It is a national sea-grant institution and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
In 1954, a group of Conway residents gathered in the Horry County Memorial Library to propose that they organize a post-secondary institution in the region. The proposal was passed, and the college operated under contract as an extension of the College of Charleston. It was called Coastal Carolina Junior College and was a two-year community college. By 1991, enrollment had grown to over 4,000 students so the Coastal Educational Foundation and Horry County Educational had no choice but to seek independent status for the school. On July 1, 1993, Coastal Carolina University became an official autonomous state institution.
Academics & Campus
CCU is located in Conway, South Carolina, one of ten cities located in the Myrtle Beach metropolitan area. The university is comprised of 115 main buildings on 621 acres and houses approximately 4,800 on-campus living facilities. Interestingly enough, Coastal owns part of Waties Island, an Atlantic barrier island that serves as a natural laboratory for instruction and research. The campus is also home to Horry County Schools Scholars Academy, a high school for gifted students.
The total enrollment for the school is 10,484 students which include 50.9% South Carolina residents, 46.9% out-of-state residents (48 states), and 2.2% international students (62 countries). About 3% of men and 5% of women are active in CCU’S Greek system. Other student organizations include SGA, the Coastal Activities Board, and a number of academic, honor, service, interest, social, and religious organizations.
Coastal Carolina offers baccalaureate degrees through more than 94 majors. It also offers 27 master’s degrees, 2 educational specialist degrees, and 2 doctoral programs. The most popular undergraduate majors are marine science, management, exercise and sport science, and communication.
