History

The Northern Arizona Normal School was established in 1899. Over the next few decades, the Arizona Board of Regents noted the school's significant growth and granted university status, renaming the college to Northern Arizona University in 1966.

Academics & Campus

The Flagstaff campus sits on 829 acres and is located 6,590 feet above sea level, making it one of the highest-elevation, four-year college campuses in the country. The largest neighboring ponderosa pine forest in the entire world surrounds it. Because of its high elevation, the school's athletic facilities are used for high-altitude training by Olympic and professional athletes worldwide. There are also over 20 statewide campuses, including the Phoenix Biomedical Campus, and their oldest and largest branch campus, NAU Yuma.

NAU has eight colleges and schools that collectively offer 150+ baccalaureate programs, 100+ graduate degree programs, and many online programs. The university is governed by the Arizona Board of Regents and accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. There were 25,569 students enrolled at Northern Arizona in the fall of 2020. It also serves 8,000 students online and on its branch campuses. NAU provides 350+ recognized professional, academic, service, and social organizations, and an intramural sports program.

For more information, visit nau.edu. The campus is located at Pine Ridge Village, Flagstaff, AZ 86001, United States.
