Norfolk State University (NSU) is a public historically black university in Norfolk, Virginia. It is a member school of the Virginia High-Tech Partnership and Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

History

In 1935, the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University was founded. It became independent in 1942 as Norfolk Polytechnic College. Two years later, due to an act of the Virginia Legislature, the school became a part of Virginia State College. The college was divided from Virginia State in 1969 and was renamed Norfolk State College. The General Assembly of Virginia granted it university status in 1979.

Academics & Campus

The 134-acre campus encompasses 31 buildings, including eight schools and colleges. The university's academic programs are divided among the Honors College; School of Business; School of Education; School of Social Work; College of Liberal Arts; College of Engineering, Science & Technology; School of Extended Learning; and Graduate School.

NSU is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, baccalaureate, master, and doctoral degrees. Norfolk State offers 36 undergraduate degrees, 15 master's, and three doctorate degrees.

In the fall of 2019, there were 5,616 students enrolled. Among the many organized and informal co-curricular activities offered, there are 63 student organizations, student publications, internships, leadership workshops, intramural activities, and more. There are also nine National Pan-Hellenic Council chapters at NSU.

Athletics -Spartans

The sports teams participate in NCAA Division I (FCS) in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

The Spartans athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, bowling, cross country, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, tennis, track & field.

The men's basketball team won the MEAC Men's Basketball Tournament championship in 2012 and got an automatic bid in that year's NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament—the school's first appearance. Go Green, Gold, & Gray!
