Texas Southern University (TSU) is a public HBCU in Houston, Texas. It is one of the largest and most extensive HBCUs in the country. The university is classified among “R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity”.

History

In 1927, the Houston Independent School District board established junior colleges for each race, as the state was segregated during this time. As a result, Houston Junior College and Houston Colored Junior College were created. In 1947, the Fiftieth Texas Legislature passed a bill that authorized and funded Texas State University for Negroes. It was the first state university in Houston and served African Americans. Eventually, Houston College moved to its present site that Hugh Roy Cullen donated.
