Jacksonville State University (JSU) is a public university that is located in Jacksonville, Alabama. According to U.S. News & Report (2020), it is ranked No. 62 in the “Best Regional Universities” and No. 27. in the “Top Public Schools Among Regional Universities in the South.”

History 

In 1883, JSU was founded as Jacksonville State Normal School, and in 1930 the name changed to Jacksonville State Teachers College, and again in 1957 to Jacksonville State College.

Academics & Campus

Located in the Appalachian foothills of northeast Alabama, Jacksonville State has a 459-acre main campus with 59 buildings. It is the flagship campus for JSU and offers education facilities, university housing and residence, on-campus dining, student centers, Greek housing, athletic facilities, student health and wellness facilities, administration offices, study centers, and more. Over 10% of the student body belongs to the 17 social and 22 total Greek organizations.

JSU currently has an enrollment of 9,000+ students, with nearly 500 faculty members. The university offers more than 95 programs of study in 6 academic schools leading to bachelor’s, master’s, education specialist, and doctorate degrees.
 

Athletics – Gamecocks

Jacksonville State is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference in Division I FCS (Football Championship Subdivision), formerly I-AA, of the NCAA.

The Gamecocks’ athletics program includes:

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, track and field, soccer, softball, tennis, beach volleyball, and volleyball.

Men: basketball, baseball, football, cross country, golf, rifle, and tennis.

In 2001, the university’s football teamed gained national attention when placekicker, Ashley Martin, became the first female football player to score a point in a Division I game. The school has won 6 NCAA championships in the years, 1984, 1985, 1990, 1991, and 1992. Go Red & White!
