Georgia State University (GSU) is a public research university in Atlanta, Georgia. It is classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities—Very high research activity.”
History
Established in 1913, GSU was originally a night school called the Georgia School of Technology’s Evening School of Commerce. In 1955, the Board of Regents granted the school a four-year college. It gained “research university” status in 1955, joining the University System of Georgia’s four research universities.
Academics & Campus
The campus is located in the heart of urban Downtown Atlanta and is considered to be the most comprehensive public institution in the state. Within its ten colleges and schools, GSU offers 250+ degree programs in 100+ fields of study. The university is home to 31 fraternities and sororities.
With a diverse student body of approximately 54,000 students, Georgia State is the largest institution of higher education in the state of Georgia. It is also in the top 10 in the nation in the number of students with a diverse majority-minority student population.

Athletics –Panthers
The sports teams compete in NCAA Division I’s Sun Belt Conference, except for the beach volleyball team, which is a member of the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association.
The Panthers’ athletic teams include:
Women: basketball, cross-country, golf, beach volleyball, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.
Men: baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, and tennis.
In 2019, the first-ever national championship win was in esports. GSU has also won conference championships in basketball, baseball, golf, softball, soccer, women’s tennis, and beach volleyball. Since 2013, the beach volleyball team has been ranked among the top ten programs nationwide. Go Panthers!
