The University of Memphis (UofM) is a public research university in Memphis, Tennessee. It is classified among R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity.

History

In 1909, the Tennessee Legislature enacted the General Education Bill that states that three colleges will be established. Memphis was chosen as the location because the proximity of the rail line would allow professors and students to travel home. In 1951, Memphis State University awarded its first B.A. degree and, six years later, received full university status.

Academics & Campus

The 1,160-acre main campus is located roughly five miles east of downtown in the University District neighborhood of East Memphis. There are three campuses in total: Park Avenue Campus, Downtown Law School Campus, and Lambuth Campus.

The University of Memphis maintains The Advanced Distributed Learning Workforce Co-Lab, The Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, The Center for Earthquake Research and Information, The College of Communication and Fine Arts, The FedEx Institute of Technology, The Herff College of Engineering, The Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology, and The Loewenberg College of Nursing.

There is an enrollment of over 22,000 students. The university is home to hundreds of student organizations. Approximately six percent of undergraduate men and eight percent of women are active in the Greek system.

Athletics -Tigers

The sports teams compete at the NCAA Division I level as a member of the American Athletic Conference. The rifle team is a member of the single-sport Great America Rifle Conference.

The Tigers athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, rifle, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, and golf.

In 1973, the men's basketball program reached the NCAA Division I basketball championship game. The women's basketball team has won two Conference USA tournament championships and two Metro Conference tournament championships. Go Blue & Gray!
