Murray State University (MSU) is a public university and has been institutionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges, since 1928. Murray is 1 of 8 schools in the state of Kentucky to achieve AACSB accreditation of business programs. For 29 straight years, MSU has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges as one of the top regional universities in the U.S.

 

History 

MSU was established in 1923 after the passage of Senate Bill 14 by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. In 1930, the name was changed to Murray State Teachers College and it was authorized to offer liberal arts and pre-professional courses. The name was changed again in 1948 to Murray State College. Finally, in 1966, the General Assembly authorized the Board of Regents to change the name to Murray State University.

 

Academics & Campus

Located in Murray, Kentucky, the main campus is in Calloway County whereas the extended campuses, offering upper level and graduate courses, are located in Paducah, Hopkinsville, Madisonville, and Henderson. MSU offers 11 associate, 64 bachelors, 42 master and specialist, and 3 doctoral programs which are administered through 4 academic colleges, 2 schools, and 30 departments. The college of business is the largest at Murray State, enrolling 23% of the undergraduate students. MSU was the first public university in the U.S. to adopt a successful campus-wide residential college program.
 

The total enrollment is 10,000+ students, with 2,831 students living on campus, and more than 1,000 international students from 66 countries around the world. MSU offers 170+ student organizations including 26 chapters of both social and professional Greek organizations.

Athletics –Racers

Murray State’s men’s and women’s athletic teams are known as the Racers, except for the baseball team which is known as the Thoroughbreds. All athletic teams compete in the Ohio Valley Conference.
 

The Racers’ athletics program includes:
 

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, hockey, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

 

Men: basketball, baseball, football, golf, hockey, wrestling, track and field, and cross country.

 

MSU is renowned for its men’s basketball program, which has appeared in the NCAA Tournament 15 times. Murray State is also home of a nationally ranked collegiate bass fishing team that has won multiple titles, some include national championships. Go Blue & Gold!
