This then shifted into expanding the school into a university. Two years later, the university offered the Colleges of Liberal Arts and College of Medicine. The institution was named after General Oliver Otis Howard, a Civil War hero who was the founder of HU and the Commissioner of the Freedmen’s Bureau.
