San Diego State University (SDSU) is a public research university located in San Diego, California. It is the third oldest and southernmost institution in the California State University (CSU) system. It is ranked among “R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity” and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. According to the U.S. News & World Report 2021 rankings, SDSU is tied for 143rd among 289 national universities.

History 

In 1897, the school began as the San Diego Normal School and was designed to educate local women to become elementary school teachers. By the 1930s, it had outgrown its original campus and moved to its current location on Montezuma Mesa. San Diego State College became a part of the CSU system in 1960 and was renamed to SDSU in 1974.

Academics & Campus

The campus, located at Montezuma Mesa, comprises 15+ dorms, student apartments, fraternity row, and language and honors housing that can accommodate more than 4,100 students. SDSU also operates two branch campuses: The Imperial Valley Campus in Calexico, CA, and in Brawley, CA. All of the students on campus have access to 350+ clubs and organizations.

 

As of fall 2020, the university has 35,578 students enrolled. There are over 300,000 alumni to date and have also had 65+ Fulbright student scholars since 2005. In fall 2018, San Diego State University was consistently one of the most applied to colleges across the nation, receiving more than 60,500 undergraduate applications.

 

SDSU offers 190 bachelor’s degrees, 91 master’s degrees, 25 doctoral degrees, and 26 different teaching credentials. The university offers more doctoral degrees and enrolls the largest number of doctoral students than any other campus in the CSU system. In 2015, San Diego State broke its own record for enrolling the most doctoral students.

Athletics –Aztecs

The sports teams compete in the NCAA Division I (FBS), with its primary conference being the Mountain West Conference.  

The Aztecs’ athletics program includes:

Women: basketball, cross-country, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and water polo.

Men: baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, and tennis.

The Aztecs have competed in the NCAA Tournament 189 times at the Division I FBS level. They have earned one NCAA national championship at the Division I level and have won seven national championships while at the Division II level. They have also claimed three national team titles at the varsity level. Go Aztecs!
