Wright State University is a public research university in Dayton, Ohio. It is classified among “R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity”.

History

The school was initially a branch campus of Miami University and Ohio State University. The Ohio General Assembly passed legislation in 1965 that transformed it into a separate institution. In 1967, it became independent and was named in honor of the aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright. At the time, the region lacked a public university for higher education. The United States Air Force donated its extra acreage of the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, making up the majority of the land for the university’s campus.

Academics & Campus

Other than the main campus, there is an additional branch campus on Grand Lake St. Marys called Wright State University Lake Campus.

The university is divided into three schools and seven colleges: the College of Education and Human Services, the College of Engineering and Computer Sciences, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Nursing and Health, the Raj Soin College of Business, and the College of Science and Mathematics. There is also the Boonshoft School of Medicine, the School of Professional Psychology, and the Wright State University Graduate School for graduate students.

Wright State provides 106 baccalaureate degrees and 136 graduate programs. The branch campus offers limited bachelor’s and master’s degrees plus 15 associate degrees. In addition, WSU offers Air Force ROTC and Army ROTC programs. The Higher Learning Commission accredits the university.

The total enrollment across both campuses is 12,234 students. Wright State University is home to one local fraternity, five North American Interfraternity Conference fraternities, and five National Panhellenic Conference sororities. Notable alumni include Brian Anderson, David Albright, Laved Abidi, J. Todd Anderson, and Jim Baldridge.
