History

Founded in 1927, the university began as Houston Junior College when trustees of the Houston Independent School District (HISD) Board of Education authorized the operation. It was primarily used to educate the future teachers at the junior college. In 1933, the school became eligible to become a university when the Governor of Texas, Miriam A. Ferguson, signed House Bill 194 into law. A year later, HISD’s Board of Education made the school a four-year institution and changed its name to the University of Houston.

Academics & Campus

Its campus spans 667 acres in southeast Houston and is a multi-campus university with a branch campus located in Sugar Land. UH’s main campus provides students with more than 282 exceptional degree programs through its 14 academic colleges including architecture, law, optometry, and pharmacy. The students have access to over 400 student organizations and 17 intercollegiate sports teams. It is one of four public universities in Texas with a Phi Beta Kappa chapter.

The third-largest university in Texas with over 46,000 students, UH is home to award-winning faculty, leading-edge research centers, international leading alumni, and one of the most diverse student populations in the U.S. According to U.S. News & World Report, the University of Houston is ranked as the second-most ethnically diverse research university in the nation. UH’s Asian and Hispanic student population is among the highest in the state and has been deemed a Hispanic-serving institution.
