Loyola University Chicago (LUC) is a private Jesuit research university in Chicago, Illinois. It is one of the largest Catholic universities in the U.S. and is ranked among the top 104 universities in the nation. In addition, LUC is classified among “R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity.”

History

In 1870, Arnold Damen, a Jesuit priest, and educator established St. Ignatius College. It was renamed Loyola University in 1909 and, in 1912, moved to the Lake Shore Campus adjacent to the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Because of its growth, LUC established professional schools in business, law, medicine, and nursing. In 1914, a downtown campus was founded, including the School of Sociology. Although the school enrolled its first female students, it did not become entirely coeducational until the year 1966.

Academics & Campus

The university’s flagship Lake Shore Campus is located on the shores of Lake Michigan in Edgewater neighborhoods on Chicago’s north side in the Rogers Park. It is the school’s primary residential campus, home to 40 buildings such as the College of Arts and Sciences and several different graduate programs. Loyola also has six campuses across the Chicago metropolitan area, including the Retreat and Ecology Campus, the Water Tower Campus, and the Health Sciences Campus.

Along with its campus in Rome, LUC also has guest programs in Ho Chi Minh City and Beijing. Additionally, Loyola University Chicago owns and operates the Cuneo Mansion and Gardens in Vernon Hills, Illinois. The estate functions as a museum and hosts special events and academic programs in law, education, and business.

Within its thirteen colleges and schools, the university provides 80+ undergraduate and 140 graduate/professional programs. There are approximately 17,000 students enrolled. Also, LUC has many Greek letter organizations like traditional fraternities and sororities, cultural interest fraternities and sororities, and even professional co-ed fraternities.

For more information, visit: www.luc.edu. The campus is located at: 1032 W Sheridan Rd, Chicago, IL 60660, United States.
