History

In 1833, Mercer Institute was founded in Penfield, Georgia, as a boys' preparatory school. It was established by professor Billington McCarthy Sanders who served as the first president, and a Baptist minister, Adiel Sherwood, who founded a boys' manual labor school that served as a model for the institute. The school was named after a prominent Baptist leader, Jesse Mercer.

In 1837, the Georgia General Assembly granted a university charter, and in 1838, it was renamed Mercer University. It graduated its first university class, which was only three students, in 1841. Additionally, Mercer was one of 131 colleges and universities in WWII that was in the V-12 Navy College Training Program.
