Cornell University (CU) is a private Ivy League, land-grant research university located in Ithaca, New York. It is one of the few private land-grant universities in the U.S. According to the U.S. News & World Report National Universities ranking, CU is ranked 12th place for the past 30 years. Since 1921, it has been accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

History

The university was established in 1865 when the New York State Senate approved it as a land-grant university. Founded by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White, Cornell was intended to teach and contribute all fields of knowledge from the classics to the sciences.

Academics & Campus

CU is classified into 7 undergraduate colleges and 7 graduate departments at its main campus in Ithaca. Three of the colleges are state-supported statutory through the State University of New York (SUNY) system. The Ithaca campus sits on East Hill and comprises 2,300 acres, overlooking the city and Cayuga Lake.

Cornell’s admission process has never been restricted by religion or race and is considered a co-educational, non-sectarian institution. However, getting into the university is highly competitive. For Fall 2019, 3,189 freshmen students enrolled with a 10.9% acceptance rate. The total student body is 23,620 students who represent all 50 states and 119 countries. There are many notable alumni and affiliates, which include 61 Nobel laureates, four Turing Award winners, one Fields Medalist, 34 Marshall Scholars, 55 Olympic Medalists, and more. CU offers more than 1,000 registered student organizations and 70 Greek chapters, which involve 33% male and 24% female undergrads.
