Columbia University is one of the most influential research centers in the world. It is an independent, privately supported, nonsectarian institution of higher education. Its official name is The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York. According to the U.S. News & World Report, CU is ranked 3rd among United States' national universities and 7th internationally.

History

The university was established in 1754 as King's College by King George II of England's royal charter. It is known as the oldest university of higher learning in NY and the 5th oldest in the U.S. Unfortunately, in 1776, The American Revolution brought the growth of the college to a halt and forced a suspension of instruction. The school didn't open again until 1784 with a new name, Columbia. Their new identity represented the patriotic fervor that inspired the nation's quest for independence. Then, in 1897, the university moved to Morningside Heights at 116th St. and Broadway.

Academics & Campus

Columbia's main campus occupies more than 6 city blocks in Morningside Heights, New York City, a neighborhood that contains several academic institutions. The university owns over 7,800 apartments and almost 24 undergraduate dormitories. The campus is also home to many fraternities, sororities, and co-educational Greek organizations.

The student population was approximately 32,000+ as of 2017, and in 2020, Columbia received nearly 40,100 applications. A total of around 2,450 students for the class of 2024 were admitted, with an overall acceptance rate of 6.1%. This makes CU the third most selective college in the U.S. and the second most selective college in the Ivy League. Columbia has been a long-standing participant of the United States Department of Veteran Affairs Yellow Ribbon Program for over 70 years.

CU provides a distinctive and distinguished learning environment for its students in many academic and professional areas. With such an esteemed group of staff, 9 faculty members have won Nobel Prizes as well as 9 Columbia affiliates between the years 1996 and 2008.
