What is the History of the Xavier University of Louisiana?

Mother Katharine Drexel, a former Philadelphia socialite, founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and was dedicated to educating African Americans and Native Americans. In 1915, Drexel opened a high school on the site that Southern University previously occupied.

A Normal School was added two years later and offered a teaching course to African Americans, one of the few career fields available to people of color at the time. In 1925, the school became Xavier University of Louisiana.
