West Virginia State University (WVSU) is a public historically black, land-grant university in Institute, West Virginia. WVSU is one of the original 19 land-grant colleges.

History

Established as the West Virginia Colored Institute in 1891, the school provided high school education, including teacher preparation for segregated public schools. It began to offer college degrees in 1915 as the West Virginia Collegiate Institute.

In 1927, the institute was accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, becoming one of only four black colleges to gain such a status and the first of 17 original black land-grant schools to be certified by a regional association. It was also the first public college in West Virginia to be accredited. The school was renamed West Virginia State College in 1929. The college gained university status in 2004, and it finally became West Virginia State University.

Academics & Campus

Located just a couple miles from Charleston, the university is close to major cities in five bordering states. In addition, WVSU operates Gus R. Douglass Land-Grant Institute, the WVSU Extension Service, and the WVSU Agricultural and Environmental Research Station, and provides various programs.

As of fall 2017, there are 3,879 students enrolled. Many students live on campus, and most of the student body is from large urban areas outside of West Virginia and rural counties in the state. Fraternities and sororities at the university include Zeta Phi Beta, Phi Beta Sigma, Omega Psi Phi, Iota Phi Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Delta Sigma Theta, Alpha Phi Alpha, and Alpha Kappa Alpha. WVSU also has a campus radio station and a campus newspaper.
