Wofford College is a private liberal arts college in Spartanburg, South Carolina. According to the U.S. News & World Report, it is ranked 69th in the best national liberal arts colleges list. The college is one of the few four-year institutions in the southeastern U.S. founded before the Civil War that still operates on its original campus.

History

In 1850, when Benjamin Wofford died, he left a bequest of $100,000 to “establish a college of literary, classical and scientific education to be located in my native district and to be under the control and management of the Methodist Church of my native state.”

This would become one of the largest financial contributions made to U.S. higher education pre-Civil War. The college charter from the South Carolina General Assembly is dated December 16, 1851. It was finally established in 1854 on a site overlooking the tiny courthouse village of Spartanburg.

The 175-acre campus is historical and a national arboretum. Wofford College provides 26 majors as well as pre-professional programs in Dentistry, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Ministry, Teacher Education, and Veterinary Science. These include student publications like the literary magazine, student newspaper, and yearbook. Wofford College recognizes 14 chapters of national sororities and fraternities.
