Academics & Campus

Located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Western's campus encompasses more than 1,200 acres and has approximately 150 buildings. It is divided into five campuses, with the largest campus being the West Campus in Kalamazoo, also known as the Main Campus. There are 23 residence halls offered on campus.

WMU has 147 undergraduate degree programs, 73 master's degree programs, 30 doctoral programs, and one specialist degree program. The enrollment for the fall 2019 semester was 21,470 students. Western offers over 300 registered student organizations.

What is the History of the Western Michigan University?

The university was founded by Dwight B. Waldo in 1903. Michigan Governor Aaron T. Bliss signed the bill authorizing the fourth teacher-training facility in the state. Governor G. Mennen Williams signed a bill in 1957, making WMU the state's fourth public university and renamed it Western Michigan University.

Which NCAA Sports Do the Broncos Play?

The Broncos is a member of NCAA Division I (FCS) and compete in the Mid-American Conference. The men's hockey team competes in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.

The Broncos' athletics program includes:

Women: basketball, cross-country, gymnastics, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, soccer, and tennis.

Western Michigan University has won two NCAA national championships. The cross-country team won the NCAA title in 1964 and 1965. Go Brown & Gold!
