Western Illinois University (WIU) is a public university in Macomb, Illinois. In Forbes, WIU is ranked No. 413 among the best public and private colleges and universities.

History

Established in 1899, Western Illinois State Normal School was donated to the state by Macomb's Freemasons after the Illinois legislature selected Macomb as the location for the site. It eventually became Western Illinois State Teachers College. In 1960, the school offered its first undergraduate course.

Academics & Campus

The Macomb campus consists of 64 buildings in a 1,050-acre area. WIU comprises four academic colleges: Fine Arts & Communication, Education & Human Services, Business & Technology, and Arts & Sciences. Also, the Honors College, the School of Extended Students, offers nontraditional programs.

Western Illinois University provides 69 undergrad majors, 51+ bachelor's degree programs, 42 graduate degrees and certificate programs, and 13 pre-professional degrees. In addition, 7,490 students study at the university and can participate in many organizations like the school newspaper, student-run radio station, and WIU's student-produced television newscast. Greek Life includes 12 IFC fraternities, nine UGC organizations, and six PHC sororities.

Athletics -Leathernecks

The sports teams participate in the NCAA Division I Summit League. The football team competes in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

The Leathernecks athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, and track & field.

The football team has many NCAA Division I FCS playoff appearances and has numerously been ranked number one and number two. Go Purple & Gold!
