Winthrop University (WU) is a public university in Rock Hill, South Carolina. In 2021, it was ranked as the No. 13 Best Regional University in the South, according to the U.S. News & World Report.

History

David Bancroft Johnson founded the school in 1886. It changed its name to Winthrop University in 1992.

Academics & Campus

The 100-acre campus is 25 miles southwest of Charlotte, North Carolina. The university consists of five colleges and schools and offers 43 undergraduate and 27 graduate degrees. It is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Winthrop's student body is comprised of roughly 6,000 students who are mainly from South Carolina. The remaining population represents 42 states and 45 countries. There are 135 international students enrolled. The university has 180+ student organizations which include 19 chapters of national fraternities and sororities. Over 700 students are members of Greek life.

Athletics –Eagles

The sports teams participate in the NCAA at the Division I level as a member of the Big South Conference.

The Eagles' athletic teams include baseball, basketball (M+W), cross-country (M+W), esports, golf (M+W), lacrosse, soccer (M+W), softball, track and field (M+W), and volleyball.

Winthrop University considers itself to be The Campus of Champions. It has won several Big South Conference championships in baseball, men's basketball, men's cross-country, men's soccer, men's and women's tennis, softball, women's lacrosse, and women's volleyball. Go Eagles!
