Winona State University (WSU) is a public university in Winona, Minnesota. It is the oldest member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System and the first normal school west of the Mississippi River.
Founded as the First State Normal School, the institution was intended for educating and producing new elementary school teachers. During the 1850s, the state was on the American frontier however lacked well-trained teachers. Dr. John Ford, a Winona settler, lobbied the Minnesota Legislature to create normal schools. Thus, with more than $5,000 in local donations, the first tax-funded school west of the Mississippi River was born.
The Winona State Normal School was nominated as an example for the normal school movement and helped shape public education in the state. In 1921, the school was authorized to grant a four-year Bachelor of Education degree, becoming Winona Teachers College. Finally, in 1975, it became Winona State University.
