Wayne State University (WSU) is a public research university in Detroit, Michigan. It is the third-largest university in the state and is classified among R1: Doctoral Universities—Very high research activity. In the 2021 U.S. News & World Report rankings, WSU is tied for 249^th among National Universities across the country.

History

In 1868, the Detroit College of Medicine was established and then merged with the Michigan College of Medicine in 1885. The first bachelor's degrees were granted in 1925. Named after Wayne County, the institution was renamed Wayne University in 1934. The name changed to Wayne State University in 1956. It became a constitutionally mandated university three years later.

Academics & Campus

The main campus comprises 203 acres with 100+ education and research buildings. Wayne State University also has six satellite campuses: Advanced Technology Education Center in Warren, Jackson Community College in Jackson, Macomb Educational Center in Clinton Township, Orchard Ridge Campus in Farmington Hills, Schoolcraft College in Livonia, and University Center at Macomb Community College in Clinton Township.

Within 13 schools and colleges, the university offers roughly 350 programs. Additionally, WSU provides over 36 study-abroad programs in 16 countries. In fall 2020, enrollment consisted of 26,251 students. The university is the only urban research university in the state of Michigan. Wayne State University is home to 24+ fraternities and sororities.

Athletics -Warriors

The sports teams compete in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Warriors athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, fencing, golf, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, fencing, football, golf, swimming & diving, and tennis.

The men's fencing team has seven NCAA National Championships, and the women's fencing team has three wins. Go Green & Gold!
