Valdosta State University (VSU) is a public university in Valdosta, Georgia. As a member of the University System of Georgia, it is one of the four comprehensive universities.
Colonel W.S. West, C.R. Ashley, and E.J. McRee helped push legislation up to the House, thus founding an institution in 1906. The school opened as South Georgia State Normal College in 1913. The school became a four-year college in 1922, and the legislature renamed it Georgia State Women’s College.
After many programs were added and new upgrades developed, the result was to make the college into a university. In 1993, after receiving state and federal grant funds, the college finally became Valdosta State University. It was the second regional university in the University System of Georgia.
