The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC) is a public university in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. In 2016, the U.S. News & World Report ranked UWEC 33rd among regional universities in the Midwest out of 112 public and private colleges.
In 1916, Eau Claire State Normal School was founded and offered one, two, and three-year teachers’ and principals’ courses. Governor Emanuel L. Phillip said the school was established “in order that you, the sons and daughters of commonwealth, might have better educational service.” Eau Claire also houses a laboratory school called Park Elementary but eventually closed down.
The school began offering a bachelor’s degree program in 1927, becoming Eau Claire State Teachers College. During the 1940s-50s, the institution changed dramatically and saw a considerable rise in enrollment. In 1951, the Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System granted the school to offer bachelor of arts and science degrees in liberal arts. As a result, it was renamed Wisconsin State College at Eau Claire. It was granted university status in 1964, and the name was changed again to Wisconsin State University—Eau Claire.
Academics & Campus
The 333-acre campus comprises 28 major buildings and rests on the Chippewa River. UWEC also owns 168 acres of forested land for environmental research. The university consists of four colleges: the College of Nursing, the College of Education and Human Sciences, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Business.
The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire offers roughly 80 undergraduate and 14 graduate concentrations, as well as one doctoral degree and several master’s degrees. Since 1950, it has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. There are roughly 11,000 undergrads, and 500 graduate students enrolled.
