The University of West Alabama (UWA) is a public university in Livingston, Alabama.

History

In 1835, Livingston Female Academy was founded as a church-supported school for young women. More specifically, it was established by ethnic Scots-Irish Presbyterians and the school-educated future teachers. Five years later, state lawmakers incorporated the academy and granted it tax-exempt, giving the board the power to establish rules and regulations. In 1878, the name was changed to Livingston Normal College.

The U.S. Office of Education accepted a grant for the college to receive campus renovations in 1967. Also, an act of the Legislature created Livingston University with its own Board of Trustees. The school adopted the name The University of West Alabama in 1995.

Academics & Campus

The 600-acre campus has numerous academic colleges and divisions such as the School of Graduate Studies, Ira D. Pruitt School of Nursing, Division of Technology, Division of Online Programs, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, College of Liberal Arts, Julia Tutwiler College of Education, and College of Business. The University of West Alabama provides 60 undergraduate programs and ten graduate programs.

The total enrollment at UWA is 5,157 students. The university has over 50 student organizations and honors societies such as athletic support groups, special interest, religious, musical, and governing and programming. The Greek system comprises six sororities and eight fraternities.

Athletics -Tigers

The sports teams are members of the NCAA Division II Gulf South Conference. Both rodeo teams compete in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.

The Tigers athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, rodeo, soccer, softball, tennis, track, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, rodeo, soccer, tennis, and track.

The football team won UWA's only national championship in 1971. The baseball team advanced to their only Division II College World Series in 1992. Both basketball teams have made two appearances each in the NCAA Tournament. Go Red & White!
