The University of Wisconsin—Stout is a public university in Menomonie, Wisconsin. It is a member of the University of Wisconsin System. The university was designated as Wisconsin's Polytechnic University by the UW System Board of Regents in 2007.

History

In 1891, lumber magnate, Wisconsin State Senator, and Menomonie resident James Huff Stout founded a manual training school. This was the first of several educational enterprises he launched in the area. The Manual Training movement was an educational philosophy that influenced modern vocational education and trained engineers. Stout was also inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement, specifically making things by hand with skill and creativity.

James Huff Stout also established the Stout Manual Training School for kindergarteners in 1894 along with other training schools that he later merged into the Stout Institute. In 1911, following Stout's death, the school was sold to the state of Wisconsin. It became part of the Wisconsin State Colleges system in 1955, becoming Stout State College. In 1965, Stout was upgraded to university status.

In 1971, the former University of Wisconsin merged with the Wisconsin State Universities, and the school became a member of the University of Wisconsin System. As a result, it was renamed the University of Wisconsin—Stout.

Academics & Campus

The university is divided into two parts, the main campus, and the north campus. The main campus is 124 acres and comprises 245 laboratories, 25 major academic and administrative buildings, and ten residence halls. Over 3,000 students live on campus.

UW-Stout provides 60 minors, 49 undergraduate majors, 22 graduate majors, two advanced graduate majors, and a doctorate. The university also offers three terminal degree programs. The University of Wisconsin—Stout is one of two special mission universities in the UW System and offers focused programs that are related to professional careers in applied art, home economics, technology, and industry.

Athletics -Blue Devils

The sports teams compete in the WIAC at the NCAA Division III level. The women's gymnastics team is affiliated with the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association.
