The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is a public research university in El Paso, Texas. It is a member of the University of Texas System and classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities—Very high research activity.”
In 1913, the Texas governor allocated funding for a new educational institution which would be the second oldest academic institution in the UT System. The State School of Mines and Metallurgy was founded the same year, plus a practice mineshaft that still exists today. The name was changed to The University of Texas at El Paso in 1967.
Academics & Campus
The campus is unique in that it is one of the few places in the world, besides Bhutan or Tibet, to have buildings created with the Dzong architectural style. The university overlooks the Rio Grande River and has a view of Ciudad Juárez.
UTEP is divided into eight colleges and colleges, offering 76 master’s-level degrees, 74 undergraduate degrees, and 22 doctoral degrees. The University of Texas at El Paso offers the only bilingual M.F.A. creative writing program in the nation. In addition, the School of Engineering is the top producer of Hispanic engineers in the U.S.
UT-El Paso enrolls 25,151 students. It is the second-largest university in the country to have a majority Mexican American student population. Notable alumni at the school include Ana Alicia, Bob Beamon, F. Murray Abraham, Jim “Bad News” Barnes, and Nate Archibald.

Athletics – Miners
The sports teams compete in the Conference USA.
The Miners athletic teams include:
Women: basketball, cross country, golf, rifle, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.
Men: basketball, cross country, football, golf, rifle, soccer, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.
In total, the athletic programs won 21 NCAA Division I national championships. The Miners beat the NCAA basketball championship in 1966. It is tied 10th overall among schools in Men’s Sports Division I Championships. Go Miners!
