The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) is a public research university in Arlington, Texas. It is classified among R1: Doctoral Universities—Very high research activity.

History

In 1895, Arlington College was founded as a private school for primary through secondary level students. Edward Emmett Rankin, a local merchant, organized fellow citizens to donate materials and land for the schoolhouse.

It was eventually sold to the city in 1900 and, a couple of years later was sold to James McCoy Carlisle. He opened the Carlisle Military Academy in 1902. In 1949, the school was renamed Arlington State College. The college joined The University of Texas System in 1965 and adopted its current name two years later.

Academics & Campus

The main campus covers 420 areas and rests at the southern edge of downtown Arlington. The university comprises four residence halls and 18 on-campus apartment complexes. In 2007, the University of Texas at Arlington opened the Sante Fe Freight building in downtown Fort Worth with the purpose of education, offering Master of Business Administration classes and many others.

Within its ten colleges and schools, UTA offers 180+ baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degree programs. In the fall of 2019, the campus enrolled 43,863 students, making it the fourth-largest in the state and the largest university in North Texas. The university is also the third-largest producer of college graduate students in the state of Texas. In addition, the U.S. News & World Report consistently ranked the University of Texas at Arlington in the top 10 in the country for the most ethnically diverse undergrad student population.

Greek life at UT Arlington has four governing councils and 31 national and local organizations. Between 5-10% of undergrads participate within the councils.

Athletics -Mavericks

The sports teams are members of the NCAA Sun Belt Conference.

The Mavericks athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, softball, tennis, and track & field.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, tennis, and track & field.

In 1989, the volleyball team advanced to the NCAA Volleyball Final Four. During the 2016-17 season, the men's basketball team earned a berth in the National Invitation Tournament for the third time and advanced to the quarter-finals. Blue, Orange, & White!
