The United States Naval Academy (USNA, Annapolis, or Navy) is a federal service academy. It is the second-oldest of the five U.S. service academies and educates officers for commissioning into the United States Navy and Marine Corps.

The first nautical school for officers was designed by Commodore Arthur Sinclair in 1819. The school operated until 1828. This was when the U.S. Naval Academy began to grow. Established in 1845, under Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, the campus was established at Annapolis on the grounds of the former U.S. Army post-Fort Severn. It replaced Philadelphia Naval Asylum, which served as the first U.S. Naval Academy from 1838-1845. The school’s current name was adopted in 1850 after the school was placed under the supervision of the chief of the Bureau of Ordnance and Hydrography.

Academics & Campus

Located adjacent to Annapolis, Maryland, on the former grounds of Fort Severn, the campus covers a 338-acre area. The entire campus is known as “the Yard” and is a historical landmark. The student body is known as the Brigade of Midshipmen. Candidates must apply directly to the academy and also receive a nomination, usually from a member of Congress. Students attending are officers-in-training with the rank of midshipman. Approximately 1,200 attend the academy, and about 1,000 midshipmen graduate. The graduates are usually commissioned as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps.

USNA’s academic program grants a Bachelor of Science degree with a curriculum that grades the midshipmen’s performance in academics, military leadership, and their participation in athletics. They are all required to adhere to the academy’s Honor Concept.

There are roughly 500 faculty members, who are divided between civilian professors and military instructors. The majority of the professors have PhDs and are eligible to be awarded tenure.
