The United States Military Academy, West Point (USMA, Army West Point, The Point, or The Academy) is a four-year federal service academy in West Point, NY. It is the oldest of the five service academies and educates the U.S. cadets for joining the American Military. West Point is also accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

In 1802, one year after President Thomas Jefferson commanded that the U.S. Military Academy at West Point be built. Cadets were formally authorized, in 1985, to declare an academic major. Five years later, the Fourth-Class System was revised as the Cadet Leader Development System (CLDS), which then became the guide for the development of all four classes.

Academics & Campus

The campus at West Point is a national landmark and a famous tourist attraction. It includes a visitor center, the oldest museum, and other historic sites, buildings, and monuments. Located 50 miles north of New York City on the Hudson River’s western bank, the Academy also included nine barracks buildings for all of the cadets to reside for their entire four years. The cadets also dine together on weekdays for breakfast and lunch.

The students at USMA are referred to collectively as the “United States Corps of Cadets” (USCC). The Army fully funds the cadets’ tuition in exchange for an active-duty service obligation when they graduate. Roughly 1,300 cadets enter West Point each July, and approximately 1,000 graduates. Candidates must undergo a Candidate Fitness Assessment, a complete physical exam, and provide a nomination from their United States Representative, Senator, and even the Vice President or President of the United States. There are up to 60 students representing foreign countries.

The Academy is a medium-sized baccalaureate college with a full-time, four-year undergraduate program that offers instruction in the arts, sciences, and professions with no graduate program. There are 45 majors such as foreign languages, management information systems, history, economics, and mechanical engineering. USMA is also the first college in the nation to have an accredited civil engineering program.
