The University of San Francisco (USF) is a private Jesuit university in San Francisco, California. It was ranked tied for 103rd overall, according to the U.S. News & World Report.

History

The Jesuits founded St. Ignatius Academy in 1855, which originated as a one-room schoolhouse. Father Anthony Maraschi, S.J., played a significant role in the academy as he was the founder, first president, pastor, professor, and treasurer. In 1859, St. Ignatius received its charter to issue college degrees and was subsequently renamed St. Ignatius College. For the majority of its history, the school was limited to males but, in 1964, became fully coeducational. In 1978, the institution acquired Lone Mountain College.
