The University of Sioux Falls (USF) is a private Christian university in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

History

In 1871, pastors and delegates from nine Baptist churches in the Dakota Territory had their first Baptist Association meeting in Vermillion, South Dakota. The group came up with the following resolution: "Be it resolved that we take immediate steps for the establishment of an institution among us…and give our individual associated influence to encourage a more general and complete education of our youth under distinctly Christian influence."

The Dakota Collegiate Institute began in 1883 with secondary and collegiate programs. In 1885, it was renamed Sioux Falls University, with the secondary program called the Academy and the collegiate department named Sioux Falls College.

Academics & Campus

USF offers an array of study-abroad partner institutions like The American University of Greece, DEREE in Athens, Greece; Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa; Handong Global University in Pohang, Korea; and Universidad del Este in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The university offers 40 undergraduate programs, nine pre-professional programs, graduate, and adult-learning programs. It is also regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

In the fall of 2014, there were 1,142 undergraduates and 311 graduate students enrolled. The campus is home to 100+ clubs, organizations, and activities. The University of Sioux Falls is affiliated with the American Baptist Churches and welcomes students of all faiths and denominations.

Alumni at the university include Paul TenHaken, the mayor of Sioux Falls; Crystal Johnson, States Attorney for Minnehaha County; and Brian Hansen, former American football punter in the NFL.

Athletics -Cougars

The sports teams compete in the NCAA at the Division II level as members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

The Cougars athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, track & field, tennis, volleyball, and cheerleading.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, and track & field.

In 1996, the football team won the NAIA Division II Football National Championship and also won the NAIA Football National Championship three times. The team has also won 19 conference titles. Additionally, the women's basketball team advanced to the NAIA Tournament three times, and the 2003 team is the only Final Four team in USF history. Go Purple & White!
