The United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) is a service academy of the United States Coast Guard in New London, Connecticut. It is the smallest of five American service academies.
Originally the School of Instruction of the Revenue Cutter Service, the school was established in 1876 as a two-year apprenticeship. In 1900, the school moved to Curtis Bay, Maryland, and ten years later, moved again to Fort Trumbull. It became the Coast Guard Academy in 1915.
Academics & Campus
The suburban campus covers 103 acres. The Academy has nine major fields of study and doesn’t require a congressional nomination for admission, which is rare for a service academy. USCGA is accredited by AACSB, ABET, and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. While there are 1,069 cadets enrolled, only 200 will graduate each year.
The Corps is arranged as one regiment and separated into eight companies, which is composed of roughly 120 cadets of all classes. The Coast Guard Academy offers numerous club sports like water polo, rugby, ice hockey, and triathlon.
For more information, visit: The campus is located at: 31 Mohegan Ave Pkwy, New London, CT 06320, United States.
Athletics – Bears
The sports teams compete in Division III of the NCAA.
The Bears athletic teams include:
Women: basketball, cross country, lacrosse, pistol, rifle, rowing, sailing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, track & field, and volleyball.
Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, lacrosse, rowing, sailing, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, and wrestling.
In 2011, freshman sailor, Krysta Rohde, gained recognition for being the first academy cadet and second first-year student ever to win the ICSA Women’s Singlehanded National Championship. The football team in 1951 was the first undefeated team at the academy and won six games that season. Go Blue & Orange!
