The University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) is a public university with three campuses in the Low Country region of SC. It belongs in the University of South Carolina System.
Beaufort College, a preparatory school in Beaufort, was chartered in 1795 to serve the local families. The college closed in 1861 due to the Civil War and was used as a hospital for Union forces. From 1909-1959, it was an elementary school. After that, Beaufort began expanding to additional campuses throughout the state.
In 1959, the University of South Carolina’s branch campus was established on the former grounds of Beaufort College. In 2002, the campus offered bachelor’s degrees, and a second campus was opened in Bluffton. Two years later, programs were provided for United States Marine Corps on Parris Island, South Carolina. In 2018, the university opened a third campus on Hilton Head Island.
Academics & Campus
The main campus in Bluffton, South Carolina, offers apartment-style housing, ten dorms, and five freshman dorms. The university is one of three senior campuses in the University of South Carolina System. USCB also has a campus in Beaufort, which has the Department of Visual Arts & Design as well as honor programs. In addition, the Hilton Head Island campus is home to the hospitality management program.
The University of South Carolina Beaufort offers more than 20 programs of study. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The total enrollment consists of 1,900 students. Several student organizations are on campus, such as academic clubs, honor societies, religious groups, and special interest clubs. The largest organization on campus is the Student Government Association. Also, the university recognizes five chapters of national sororities and fraternities.
