The University of Portland (UP) is a private Catholic university in Portland, Oregon. It is ranked the 2nd best “Regional University.” The university is affiliated with the Congregation of the Holy Cross.

History

Founded in 1901, Columbia University was named after the Columbia River. The head of the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon, Archbishop Alexander Christie, purchased West Hall on Waud’s Bluff that had been unoccupied by Portland University. With financial assistance from the Congregation of Holy Cross, the institution opened with eight Catholic priests as professors. In 1902, the Congregation was given ownership of the university.

Two decades later, Columbia achieved junior college status. In 1935, it was renamed the University of Portland. Women were admitted to all courses of study in 1951. In 1967, the ownership of the school was transferred to a board of Regents. Two years later, Multnomah College became part of UP.
