The University of Tennessee at Martin (UT Martin or UTM) is a public university in Martin, Tennessee. It is one of the five schools of the University of Tennessee System. In the 2020 U.S. News & World Report ranking, the university tied for No. 28 in Regional Universities South.

History

Founded in 1900, the school started as the Hall-Moody Institute. In 1917, the institute changed its name to Hall-Moody Normal School, when teacher training became its focus. Then in 1951, it was redesignated the University of Tennessee Martin Branch, and in 1961, it was the first campus in the University of Tennessee system to start racial desegregation of undergrads.

Academics & Campus

Before acquiring Lambuth University in Jackson, UTM was the only federal university in West Tennessee outside of Memphis. The university serves a broad experimental farm and numerous satellite centers. It is also the location of the medical fraternity Mu Epsilon Delta which was founded in 1965. UT Martin is authorized by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Athletics –Skyhawks

The sports teams participate in the Ohio Valley Conference.

The Skyhawks' athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, beach volleyball, cross-country, equestrian, rifle, rodeo, soccer, softball, tennis, and track, and field.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, rifle, rodeo, golf, and track and field.

The women's basketball team has consecutively made several appearances in the national tournament. In 2011, the women's tennis team won its fifth Ohio Valley Conference championship. In 2013, the university hosted the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championship at Skyhawk field for the first time in UTM soccer history. Go Blue & Orange!
