The University of South Carolina Upstate is a public university in Valley Falls, South Carolina. It belongs to the University of South Carolina System.

History

Dr. G.B. Hodge created a separate university after the Spartanburg General Hospital discontinued its degree program. In 1967, the Spartanburg Regional Campus opened as a two-year college. It became a four-year university in 1975, changing its name to the University of South Carolina Spartanburg. In 2004, the USC Board of Trustees voted to change the name to the University of South Carolina Upstate. This would reflect its mission to educate people in the upstate region of the state.

Academics & Campus

The university has five colleges and schools: School of Education, Human Performance, and Health; George Dean Johnson Jr., College of Business and Economics; Mary Black School of Nursing; College of Science and Technology; and College of Arts, Social Science, and Humanities. USC is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Approximately 6,000 students are enrolled. The University of South Carolina Upstate is home to two IFC fraternities, three NPHC fraternities, three NPC sororities, and four NPHC sororities.
