The University of South Alabama (USA) is a public research university in Mobile, Alabama. In 2011, the university was ranked 22^nd best public university in the southern U.S. and 52^nd overall in the south. It is classified among R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity.

History

In the early 1960s, civic leaders in the area wanted to improve higher education programs and planned for a four-year degree-granting institution. The Alabama Legislature passed the bill for a new independent university, and in 1963, the University of South Alabama came to be.

Academics & Campus

The main suburban campus is on 1,224 acres and is divided into ten colleges and schools. These College of Arts and Sciences, College of Education and Professional Studies, College of Engineering, Graduate School, Honors College, Mitchell College of Business, Pat Capps Covey College of Allied Health Professions, and School of Computing.

USA provides 50 bachelor's degree and certificate programs along with 40+ master's degree programs. The university also offers classes at the Fairhope campus in Baldwin County and its Gulf Coast Campus in Gulf Shores.

In 2018, 15,093 were enrolled in South Alabama. The campus is also home to eight Interfraternity Council organizations, eight National Panhellenic Council organizations, five Panhellenic Council organizations, three professional fraternities, and one independent social fraternity.

Some of the notable alumni at USA are former Major League Baseball catcher Glenn Borgmann; former MLB infielder Marlon Anderson; Rosalynn Bliss, the first woman to be elected Mayor of Grand Rapids, MI, and sculptor Tina Allen.

Athletics -Jaguars

The sports teams are founding members of the Sun Belt Conference, which is a Division I/FBS conference.

The Jaguars athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and track & field.

The basketball team has reached the NCAA tournament eight times. Alumni baseball players like David Freese were the National League Championship Series MVP and World Series MVP in 2011. In 2003, Juan Pierre was a World Series winner with the Florida Marlins. Go Blue, Red, & White!
