What is the History of the University of Rochester?

The university was founded in 1796 when The First Baptist Church of Hamilton established the Baptist Education Society of the State of New York, which was renamed the Hamilton Literary and Theological Institution. This then created Colgate University and the University of Rochester. The schools were used to train clergy in the Baptist tradition.

There was then the creation of a collegiate division that was granted a charter by the state in 1846. The Baptist Education Society was insistent that the university be moved to Rochester, NY. Unfortunately, legal action prevented it, so instead, faculty, students, and trustees sought a new charter for a new university in Rochester.

Which NCAA Sports Do the Yellowjackets Play?

The athletic teams participate in Division III of the NCAA in the University Athletic Association and Liberty League, except for the men's squash team, which is ranked top 5 in Division I.

The Yellowjackets' athletics program includes:

Women: basketball, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: basketball, baseball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, squash, swimming and diving, tennis, and track and field.

The teams at U of R have won four national championships, with women's soccer winning in 1986-87, men's basketball winning in 1990, and men's cross-country winning in 1991. There have been 14 student-athletes who have won individual national titles across the sports teams, such as cross country, track, and field, tennis, and golf.
