The University of New Mexico (UNM) is a public research university in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is ranked among “R1: Doctoral Universities—Very noble research activity” and is tied for 187th in the U.S. among national universities.
The institution was founded as New Mexico’s flagship university in 1889. It was established after the passage of House Bill No. 186 by the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of New Mexico.
Academics & Campus
Located on 600 acres, the main campus is in Albuquerque on the heights a mile east of Downtown Albuquerque. There are many other campuses in Gallup, Los Alamos, Rio Rancho, Taos, and Los Lunas. Through its 12 colleges and schools, the university offers 215+ degree and certificate programs which include 94 baccalaureate’s, 71 master’s, and 37 doctoral degrees. There are also 400 student-run organizations through UNM such as academic, athletic, ethnic, honorary, political, religious, service groups, and fraternities and sororities.
According to the U.S. News & World Report, the admission process at UNM is rated “selective.” For fall 2019, the University of New Mexico admitted 5,973 freshmen, and 2,594 of them are enrolled. It is considered to have one of the largest student and faculty populations of Hispanics and Native Americans in the country. The schools of law and business had some of the largest Hispanic student body of any university in the nation.

The university’s NCAA Division I program (FBS) participates in the Mountain West Conference.
The Lobos’ athletics program includes:
Women: basketball, cheer, cross-country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.
Men: baseball, basketball, cheer, cross-country, football, golf, tennis, and track and field.
The women’s basketball team has won the Mountain West championship four times and has gone to the NCAA tournament six times. The football team has been to six bowl games since 1997. Go Lobos!
