About the University of Montana Grizzlies

The University of Montana (UM) is a state research university in Missoula, Montana. It is a flagship university of the Montana University System and is the second-largest school in the system. It is ranked among R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity.

Academics & Campus

The university comprises eleven colleges which include two professional schools. In the fall of 2018, UM enrolled 10,962 undergraduate and graduate students. The university is ranked 17^th in the nation and 5^th among public universities. It has produced Rhodes Scholars, 11 Truman Scholars, 14 Goldwater Scholars, and 40 Udall Scholars. There are a variety of student organizations, such as seven fraternities and four sororities.

What is the History of the University of Montana?

In 1881, Congress's act, dedicated 46,000 acres in Montana Territory to establish a university. In 1893, Missoula acquired the parliamentary vote at the Third Montana Legislative Assembly for the new university, which was opened in 1895.

Athletics –Grizzlies

The athletic teams compete in the NCAA's Big Sky Conference. They are nicknamed the Montana Grizzlies, also known as Griz and Lady Griz.

The Grizzlies' athletics program includes:

Women: basketball, cross-country, golf, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, rowing, soccer, tennis, and track and field.

The football team has been one of the most dominant football teams in both the Big Sky Conference and the NCAA FCS since the 1990s. They won the I-AA national title twice. The men's basketball team has been to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament seven times and the National Invitation Tournament three times. Go Grizzlies!
