The University of Idaho (U of I) is a public land-grant research university in Moscow, Idaho. It is the primary land-grant research university in the state as well as the lead institution in the Idaho Space Grant Consortium. U of I is classified among “R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity”.

History

Governor Edward Stevenson of the Idaho Territory signed the territorial legislature’s Council Bill No.20 in 1889, officially establishing the university as the upcoming state’s land-grant institution. However, classes didn’t open until 1892.

Until 1963, the University of Idaho was Idaho’s only university for 71 years. In 1909, its College of Law was established. The American Bar Association accredited it first in 1925.

Academics & Campus

The campus at U of I is the largest in the state, with 1,585 acres of land in the rolling hills of the Palouse region. It stands at an elevation of 2,600 feet above sea level. A rural, residential campus, the school has four residence hall communities to choose from. The university also has branch campuses in Boise, Coeur d’Alene, and Idaho Falls. Additionally, it operates a research park in Post Falls.

Organized into ten colleges, the University of Idaho provides 142 degree programs and certificates in 30 areas of study. Some programs include accountancy and wildlife resources. Students also have the opportunity to participate in 200+ clubs and organizations from sports to faith-based. In addition, U of I hosts six multicultural Greek organizations, ten houses sororities, and 18 housed fraternities. Greek Life makes up over 20% of the student body.
