The University of Hawai’i at Mānoa (U.H. Mānoa, the University of Hawai’i, or U.H.) is a public land-grant research university that participates in the sea-grant, space-grant, and sun-grant research consortia. It is one of only four such universities in the country. U.H. is also ranked among “R1: Doctoral Universities—Very high research activity.”

The university was established in 1907 and is the largest and oldest of the 10 UH campuses. It was founded as a land-grant college of agriculture and mechanical arts. Maui Representative William Coelho introduced a bill into the Territorial Legislature which enabled construction to begin. In 1920, William Kwai Fong Yap petitioned the Hawaii Territorial Legislature for university status which then led to the final renaming to the University of Hawaii. In 1931, the Territorial Normal and Training School was absorbed into the University, becoming the U.H. College of Education.

UH is located in the beautiful Mānoa Valley, outside downtown Honolulu, Hawaii, on the island of O’ahu, and it covers 320 acres. It has 3 university campuses and 7 seven community college campuses. Athletics—Rainbow Warriors

The University of Hawai’i belongs in NCAA Division I and is the only Hawaii school to compete. The football team competes in the Mountain West Conference and most other sports teams compete in the Big West Conference. UH competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and indoor track and field. The coed and women’s sailing teams are members of the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference.

The men’s teams are known as Rainbow Warriors and the women’s teams are called Rainbow Wahine. “Wahine” means “woman” in Hawaiian. They are the most notable for men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, baseball, and football programs.

The Rainbow Warriors’ athletics program includes:

Women: basketball, softball, cross country, track and field, soccer, sailing, volleyball, beach volleyball, swimming and diving, water polo, golf, and tennis.

Men: basketball, baseball, football, golf, swimming and diving, tennis, and volleyball.

UH won the 2004 Intercollegiate Sailing Association National Championships. The women’s volleyball program won NCAA championships 3 times. Go Rainbow Warriors and Wahine!
