The University of California, Irvine (UCI) is a public research university and is one of the ten campuses of the UCS. It is classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities—Very high research activity.” For 2021, the U.S. News & World Report ranked UCI tied for 35th among national universities in the U.S. It was also rated as one of the “Public Ivies” with an education comparable to the Ivy League.
The university, established in 1965, was one of three new University of California campuses founded under the California Master Plan of Higher Education. During the 1950s, the University of California saw the need for new campuses for the increase of enrollment because of the post-war baby boom. One location selected was Irvine Ranch. Unlike the other campuses, UCI wasn’t named for the city it was built in but after the landowner, James Irvine, who administered the 94,000-acre ranch. Interestingly enough, The Irvine Company sold 1,000 acres to the university for one dollar.

According to the U.S. News & World Report, UC Irvine is considered “most selective” for college admissions in the nation. In 2019, it was the third-most selective University of California campus.
There are over 650 student clubs and organizations for students to choose from and bond over shared interests that are either academic-related or multicultural, political, religious, service, social, or athletic. UCI is affiliated with seven Nobel Prize laureates and seven Pulitzer Prize winners (which include three faculty members and four alumni).
