About the University of Akron

What is the History of the University of Akron?

Following the annual convention of the Universalist Church of the state of Ohio, a prominent businessman and Universalist, John R. Buchtel, contributed to the funding of the new university that would be named Buchtel College. Fellow Akronites helped donate as well, and the school was founded three years later, in 1870.

Later on, in 1907, the college became non-denominational, ditching its Universalist affiliation. In the year 1967, it would finally become a state university, now known as The University of Akron.

Which NCAA Sports Do the Akron Zips Play?

The Akron Zips make up a total of 17 athletic teams and over 300 extraordinary student-athletes. Striving for competitive growth, the Zips have been members of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) for 30 years.

The Zips' intercollegiate athletics program includes:

Women- basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer, softball, volleyball, swimming and diving, indoor and outdoor track and field.

Men- baseball, basketball, football, soccer, indoor and outdoor track, and field.

In 2009, the soccer team led an undefeated season and made it to the Men's Division I Soccer Championship. Their soccer players have gone on to play professionally for teams such as the Philadelphia Union and Sporting Kansas City. Go Zips!
